WATER HEATER REPLACEMENT
*This service is provided in conjunction with the Home Depot Home Services.
What is it?
Water heater replacement is the removal of the existing water heater and installation of a new unit. Delta Mechanical provides a full array of replacement tanks including natural gas, propane, electric, and solar water heaters (Availability subject to geographical location). We also install gas and electric tankless water heaters nationwide.
Gas water heaters operate via natural gas or propane gas. They utilize a burner to heat up the tank of water to an adjustable temperature, usually no more than 125 degrees. Gas water heaters have a fast recovery rate, meaning that once all the hot water from the tank is depleted, they can quickly heat up a full tank again, allowing the consumer the opportunity to utilize more than one fixture at once (shower, dishwasher, etc.). Gas water heaters produce combustion/exhaust, so they have a vent at the top to channel all spent hot gases away from the unit.
Electric water heaters function by using two thermostats located on the side of the tank to heat up two elements within the tank. These elements get red hot, heating all the water inside. The thermostats are adjustable to 125 degrees in most cases. Electric water heaters do not require a vent, so they can be installed in a wider variety of spaces. They do have a slower recovery rate than gas water heaters. Either system will function in any home and roughly have the same life span. All sizes are available, from small, 10 gallon units to large scale 100 gallon units and many sizes in between.
Why do you need it?
- Do you get Rust Colored or Yellow Water?
- Is your water heater leaking?
- Are you not receiving enough hot water?
If you answered “yes” to any of the questions, a water heater replacement is the only permanent solution for your issue. All homes have some sort of water heating system, be it gas, electric, solar, or tankless and unfortunately, none of them last forever. Most standard water heaters have an average life span of 10-15 years Spotting leaks on your existing water heater will often be the most recognizable of symptoms that you are in need of a replacement. Rust or yellow colored water is another symptom that could lead to a water heater replacement but may also be a sign that there are pipes that need to be replaced (see Single/Multi Family Repipe). Not receiving the proper amount of hot water is normally caused by the buildup of sediment in the bottom of your existing water heater. This sediment buildup, over time, can cause the water heater to only heat a smaller portion of water. If the sediment builds up to the bottom element in the water heater, this could cause the element to dry fire which in turn will cause the water heater to fail.
How is it done?
A typical water heater replacement can be completed in as few as 2-3 hours, with minimum interruption of water service to the residence. This ensures that the residents are not without water for a substantial amount of time. The existing water heater will be removed and in an ideal scenario will be replaced with a similar sized unit. All things considered, a water heater replacement is a very simple installation. The most common issue for water heater replacements are space and location restrictions. If the current water heater is located in an area such as above/below and interior A/C unit, on a shelf or stand, in a closet, or in an attic there may be additional work and fees associated with your installation. This could also restrict the size and gallons of your replacement water heater. In any of those scenarios, a tankless water heater would be an ideal replacement since size and space are less of a factor with that type of install.
