What is it?
Tankless water heaters are a relatively new concept to the U.S., having been popular in Japan and Europe for years. Tankless water heaters occupy a very small area, averaging about the size of a small suitcase, and are wall-mountable. They use (on most units) a combination of gas and electricity to operate, and are much more efficient than standard water heaters. They operate cleanly and quietly, and require little to no maintenance. They can be installed inside or outside, and as such, have different venting requirements than tank-type heaters. They also are available with an optional wall-mounted keypad to adjust temperature. All this new technology and convenience comes with a price (literally) however, averaging between roughly three to five times as much as a standard water heater installation. The wait for hot water is also a bit longer due to the design of the unit. They do have a 25-year average life span however, with a standard 10-year warranty.
Why do you need it?
- Endless Hot Water!
- Reduced Energy Costs!
- Better Performance and Life Span!
- Space Savings!
- Cleaner, Fresher Water!
Any one of these is a reason to install a tankless water heater in a home or multi-family structure. With endless hot water, you never have to worry about taking a cold shower again. Tankless water heaters heat on demand, so you’re not limited to a pre-heated supply of hot water as with a tank system. You can enjoy hot water the benefits of being able to taking a shower, washing dishes, and doing laundry at the same time. With a tankless water heater installation, you will also be able to enjoy considerable energy savings. Tankless water heaters are designed to be extremely efficient and will only heat water when you need it. When you no longer need hot water, the unit will shut down until you need hot water again. This means when you are not using the hot water, your unit will not consume any additional energy which is a substantial advantage over conventional tank-style water heaters. Another advantage over conventional water heaters is that tankless units have a commercial grade copper heat exchanger which adds durability and reliability. Tankless water heaters also allow you to reclaim space in your home. A tankless unit is roughly the size of a small suitcase and can be installed on just about any wall inside or outside of your home. Having a tankless unit will also help provide you with cleaner, fresher water. Traditional water heaters store the water on the inside of the tank where scale and rust build up. Tankless water heaters have no tank so there is no danger of adding extraneous minerals and/or chemicals to your water.
How is it done?
A typical tankless water heater installation can be completed in as few as 4-5 hours, with minimum interruption of water service to the residence. This ensures that the residents are not without water for a substantial amount of time. The existing water heater will be removed and an ideal location for the tankless unit will be determined. Tankless units can be installed inside or outside of the home which allows for more flexibility with the install location. Moving the location of the water heater from inside to outside the home will, in most cases, require a small repipe. Venting must also be taken into consideration if you are transitioning from a conventional gas water heater to a gas tankless water heater. If the gas tankless water heater is being installed on the exterior of the home, venting should not be an issue because the exterior tankless units have a vent on the front of the case. If you are going from a conventional electric water heater to an electric tankless water heater, the electrical service to your home will need to be upgraded. Because of the increased amount of BTU’s that the tankless unit requires to heat the water, the same breakers used for the conventional water heater will not be sufficient. If you are installing a gas tankless water heater to replace your conventional gas water heater, the gas service to the home will have to be sufficient enough for the tankless unit. Tankless water heaters can be used individually, in pairs, or in groups of three or more for a commercial application.
